Gilpin Hotel

Nestled into the rugged Lake District terrain near Windermere is a family-owned hotel that’s been gaining accolades for its gastronomy and pampering for over two decades. Rather than overplay either the frivolous modernity or historical correctness, Gilpin Hotel & Lake House strikes a measured balance between both that feels entirely natural, especially when you’re greeted by a bronze tree fountain pouring water into its leaves (it apparently set the original owner back a mere £10k on a whim) and arrive in a room that’s clad in ageless cedar wood and finished with local slate stone.

Dotted around the gravel drive are a collection of unique, individual Garden Suites and Spa Lodges that sink into the landscape with privacy, luxury and intimacy in equal measure. They’re all clad in warm, aged cedar wood and finished with local slate stone, which seems to suit the setting perfectly. We stayed in Lowther, one of the five new Spa Suites that were built during lockdown, which includes a bedroom ‘floating’ over the lake with views of the mountains; a massive circular stone bath and state-of-the-art automated massage chair; a steam room, sauna, infrared lounge bed and huge hydrotherapy hot tub; and even an indoor and outdoor firepit to enjoy after dark.

Those staying in the main hotel, meanwhile, can take their pick from six Junior Suites with decked terraces or patios; six Garden Suites that open onto the gardens; five slightly larger Spa Lodges with ensuites that include rainmaker showers and steam rooms inside, plus hydrotherapy hot tubs outside; and 30 bedrooms with lovely Lakeland views (all lead directly into the garden, except the Lake House rooms). There’s also a serene Spa Space, where you can have treatments and relax in the bubbly spa pool.

As well as offering a high-end experience, the staff are passionate about creating lasting memories for guests who return time and again. You can see this in the relaxed atmosphere, and how everyone – from the chefs to the front of house team – is on hand to give recommendations for the best walks and activities to do in the area.
